So, I've been playing this game for a while now (https://www.crazygames.com/game/epic-empire-tower-defense), it's a Kingdom Rush knockoff that does some things better than its source, but a lot of things worse. The reason I bring it up is that there's a hero that's obviously Groot & Rocket.

i think adding role queue is fine, just not balancing the game around it, which was the issue that came into play with OW

No, don't split the players, if you want role queue play OW2.

...because some people might find the game more fun with a role queue option? It doesn't have to be for every mode, just...make it an option?
