Or King of the bridge, where someone makes up chess rules.
I assumed it was just the fog of war preventing us from seeing the other pieces that were clearly on the board. Or maybe the chessboard was set to "high performance" instead of "maximum detail", so most of the pieces weren't displayed.
That's a tesseract, they represent 4th dimensional space, not 5th.

** They can see things that we can't.
*** That we never have we seen their true forms with out going completely mad.
That or Jo forgot the king and is making up excuses. Because he is in reality a human and forgets things like where he left his car keys, cell phone and where he parked.
