Was on last night during the huge patch, servers packed to bursting, everyone loved the new fixes and content.

PS3 is the only chance this game has. While the patches are adding a lot of features most of this stuff is common in MMOs.

squeenix has been going downhill ever since the guy that made the company left. He started a new company named Mistwalker and has released several hits for the 360.

that those 20 people could be the only ones playing right now and its just coincidence that they were by you at that time. SE has lost the spark of community it used to have. Nowadays it seems like most of their MMOs are more about how many people the players can screw over to get their stuff.
Ravenblood

sending more people over to WoW than bringing them over. @Naharra it doesn't matter if you can count 20 people on your screen right now either, I counted 50+ on my screen in FFXI a few hours ago, doesn't mean much, just the total active server population. Not an attack or anything, just saying...
Ravenblood

The biggest issue I've found with FFXI is it's trying too hard to become a bit of a WoW clone. There's a reason the game has been able to go for so long as it was. I see people going in both directions, leaving WoW for FFXI and leaving FFXI for WoW. All that making FFXI like WoW is doing is

And before you call BS on me, I liked FFXI and thought its style, though restrictive in making you party all the time, was pretty cool. Visuals, music, and a nifty cutscene-styled way of present the story was all worth sticking around. Red Mage Mithra, you will be missed.

@Nahaara - don't defend a game that even the developers apologized for, realizing they failed. Not to mention server populations aren't exactly drawing in the tens of thousands of people, thereby warranting a Free2Play style to "hopefully" draw in the crowds. Won't Work. Funny, you say there's no players left to play XIV but i'm ingame right now and I can easily count 20 players on my screen right now. So don't bash a game unless you know what you're talking about.

Am I the only one who really only liked I, III, and IV? I mean, they may not have been perfect first time round, but I played the hell outta The GBA versions of I and IV, and the DS III.

Like Guild Warh who is now buy to play and has a decent shop.I also notice how greedy Square enix is in this case..like man you got a 2nd mmo out and you got a really old one many ppl are not gona buy cause its outdated..why not make it free to play?
Kaibamon
It's not dead dead. This still can live cause SE is a large company..unlike Tabula Rasa it has resources to cast a ressurection spell.Altho if they see how empty the game is..shouldn't they also think of new ways to get people to buy it?

@FF Player (again) Oh, and a thought on 12--the 'autopilot' was one of the reasons I *liked* it, actually. A little bit RTS, and a little bit like a MMO and a little like a programming game. A good set of Gambits, and you just have to sit back and *steer*, rather than micromanaging things.
Vulpis
@Rip XIV ...Actually, Square *has* tried their hand at other things--I can think of at least one fighting game, a driving game, and some non-FF RPGS. The non-RPGs didn't do well at all, and only a few of the non-FF RPGs were particularly any good.
Vulpis
@FF Player (cont)... FF9 is liked because when you get down to it, it's more or less a pre-7 style game. :-)
Vulpis
@FF Player ...heh. I liked FF12 myself gameplay wise, but do agree with you on the story--it was *much* more fun played as 'Fran the bunnygirl and her boytoys'. ;-)
FFX just fell flat--too linear, the story was mediocre, and the sphere-grid gets annoying after a short while.
FF Player

...battle system than 12. But it often just feels like the game doesn't really NEED me there to play it. You can only control one character at a time (terrible idea) and if anything you feel like a hindrance to your characters because if you die its game over. Which is just mind-blowingly stupid.
FF Player
...have been great, but the choice of main character was just...what? Would have been much better to have Ashe as the main character and focus on her story.

13 is something I have trouble with. I want to like it and I actually think it has a stronger story than 10 and a better...
FF Player
I tend to agree to a certain extent with Iceholder, but with some caveats.

Firstly I think 9 was possibly the best of the series. 10 had a good battle system but not as good story. Making 11 an MMO was a HUGE mistake. 12 was basically trying to be an MMO too hard and the story COULD...(cont)

FF XIV has been free to play for nearly a year now, for those who don't know. After a year they have not charged for a single month of service. People wonder why Squeenix might go down the drain ... entirely XIV. Hopefully a sign for them to finally stray away from the FF series and do other things.

Solution:

Sell the game only and make it free 2 play, add item shop in it with reasonable price.

Done, MMO franchise saved.

Brilliant comic. I love how with just one image you instantly know it is talking about Final Fantasy XIV.

If they do "fix" a game that no one is playing and I hear about it, I'll actually give it a try.

I still have my 50 lancer able to start up, but I stopped tracking events in FFXIV during last June. Is it worth playing again, not to mention I don't know if I have the time to play. I got sidetracked by TERA, but they pushed that off to Spring of next year.

Thanks FFXIV Anon.

They've improved FFXI to the point where I quit WoW after 6 years to go back to play it again. And I'm enjoying myself tremendously, as they removed or "made fair" a lot of the old annoying aspects. FFXIV though? Kill it and give it's money to XI, imo!

Hydrophobia was weird. They gave you a whole new game mechanic that was really cool and you could do so much with it and then you found out that there was only five minutes left in the game.

Ask the guys who made Hydrophobia. They practically redid the second half of the game but the metacritic score is still abysmal because people reviewed the release version.

Just like bad fan publicity can kill any game: "Guys, don't play this game...is TOTAL SHIT!!!, good fan publicity can bring back any game: "Man, after the last patch, now the game is TOTAL AWESOME! You should all play it!!

Call me naive, but I'm bettin on the latter.

Sure the PSX games were fun. But it was VI and IV for the SNES that got me into RPGs to begin with. Man, I feel old. :/
TheVampirate
i think both the story and gameplay has gone down hill since 10. i remember all the PSX FF games and they all had a strong focus on story and kept the good classic RPG gameplay that everyone knew and loved. since then its become linear and dumbed down. I wonder what ff XX is going to be like
JackVanElraton
Meh. I enjoy my soon to be level 95 Blue Mage. XI and XIV may not have the massive amount of players like WoW would, but XI still has around 500,000 people in Japan, North America, and Europe(Britain/France/Germany) playing it. Poor wife's frustrated at Lv.70 Red Mage and can't beat Maat.

Someone said the complete COD series is broken.

You think COD2 and 4 were broken, then you must have a really bad sense of "fixed" games.. Or a pretty strict one.
AsteriskCGY
Well I forgot about this game last year after its launch debacle, but now am sort of curious on what it's tried to fix lately. Cause FFXI was not a terrible MMO (for the most part, it beats WoW in Japan). Beta was boring combat, but really nice everything else. Just those design choices.

Most everyone I talk to says FF X was the start of the end. While I understand their reasoning, it was still a good FF game.
Now, when they ventured into MMO territory... well, shit just rolled downhill from there.
Shutter18
It's still a bit tragic though...it's such a major franchise, even if the game is shit, it'll sell out, by those hoping it'll at least capture some of the magic of the originals.
Square dosn't even need to try anymore in my opinion, they can release anything as FF, and it'll probably still be a hit

@Godot: To be honest, I stopped listening to professional reviewers when it comes to final fantasy games, and prefer sources that aren't as scared of the backlash for daring to give a final fantasy game a bad review.
Godot

I want to stress I am not trying to defend XIII here. Like I said, haven't played it. Just saying Squeenix really has no reason to cash out on the basis of XIII, since from where they're sitting it was a hit. It got good reviews from most professional reviewers, too, so it still looks like a hit.

@Dorran: "XIII and XIV were fiascos." XIV, yes, but XIII? Regardless of the game's quality (I won't make statements about it because I haven't played it), it broke sales records for the franchise. XIII was a commercial success. http://www.1up.com/news/final-fantasy-xiii-breaks-franchise

Though, uh...I'm probably still going to give it a shot after it's fixed. Because I'm a horrible masochist.
Godot
If the game is fixed, some people may return, some new people may come in to play, but not enough of either. The difference is that instead of a short, fast death, the game will die a slow, lingering death (like Star Wars: Galaxies).
FFXIV Anon

To everyone wondering if this is about Final Fantasy 14: Yes, yes it is.

Later this month will be the single biggest patch it has seen. The short version is that it may finally make the game worth the purchase price...

...almost exactly one year after the launch date.

Ah Final Fantasy. How I pity thee.
The only way to revive the series is to give players more compelling game-play as well as a compelling story-line and graphics. If all you have is a story-line and pretty graphics, you may as well move on to CG movies and ditch gaming.

Ravenblood

Nerfing a game to the point where you can now leech any job up to cap in a day or two is not fixing. Making the good weapons take dedicated small groups to really get(and people still get screwed over by partners and trios).
Firewind
It does look like a chocobo.

That said Squeenix did fix FFXI which brought back a lot of players and it revived a dead and broken game.

There is some hope for XIV.
Dorran
Nope. Time for SquareEnix to cut their losses with MMO's. Given how XIII was, they should probably cut their losses on the Final Fantasy series in general... and I've enjoyed the series for a long time. They're just losing their touch hard. XIII and XIV were fiascos.
