Must have been suprising following E3 ey? TBH Nintendo ruined PS3 and xbox 360 in console sales until about 7 months ago when xbox caught up. Nintendo failed with the hardcore gamers but they have the casual market completely in their control.

Actually, rumour has it that Nintendo is working on another console. It's an HD thing, and that's everything we know about it. They are going to Second-Party Developers with it before they go to us, however. That's why so little is known. However, I am eager to see what comes out of E3 this year~

Seriously??? Dude, 49% of all console purchses in the US for 2010 were Wii's. And, over the past several years in the US two Wii's have been sold for every PS3. Hardcore gamers may not want a Wii, but casual gamers are eating it up. There will definetly be another Nintendo console.

The problem with Nintendo is this new philosophy that modern hardware isn't important because they'll never be able to please people for long- which is bullshit as the bleeding edge is a PC thing, and most 360/PS3 owners are content with what they have hardware-wise. But Takeda isn't a logical man.

They don't need to compete with the 360 or the ps3,they made bucketloads of money from all the cheap shovelware games they put out for the Wii aimed at a more general market. fairly sure they make a profit on consoles too unlike ps3 who sold cheaper for market share.

@Enlong: And you're a fanboy. What's your point?

@Dead Herald: This generation probably marks the closest we have to anti-competition. The PS3 and the X360 are basically the same in specs and have the same third party games, the Wii refuses to compete with either and pulls an Apple. No wonder I've lost interest in consoles...
!!!
@Dead Herald: No, no, no. Blame EVERYONE. Sometime around 1980, companies realized they were no longer restrained by the Left in America (which died). And they no longer had to compete. So, they made the best effort not to (because competition cuts into profits). It's only now affecting gamers.

So far its xbox for big game selection, ps3 for ultimate quality, wii for retrogaming and the new delivery of old series, nintendo actually has very nice series but depending on them for every new console wont make it flourish, nintendo does rock on the handhelds though
Deiz Rouge
Aready has also you might like to remember the wii is exceptionally easy to hack for burned games and even easy to do that also attracted lots of buys but companies actually loose money from consoles normally they win money from games and accesories so marketwise its not a good decition.
Deiz Rouge
Actually while wii sales have been nice you must remember wii approach was to sell cheap and sell to people that not normally play videogames, while they mught buy a wii and a wiifit or so, they wont buy a lot of games for that sistem and so nintendo looses more third party producers than it (cont)

I have been wondering for awhile how Nintendo would follow up the Wii. Before Move and Kinetic, I had assumed they would go in one of those directions; but now they can't. Nintendo won't compete directly with MS/Sony. Hence, 3D and motion controls. But core consoles only support so many gimmicks.

I completely agree with you on that. The wii has become so dry of a development platform that nintendo needs to move onto something else. However, I believe the 3ds is just the beginning. Nintendo should move it's massive gaming library to a more spacious platform in cloud or PC environments.

Thing about the Wii is that the console moved a lot of units, but the software sales were pathetic. The biggest sellers on that system were Wii Sports (a pack-in so it doesn't count), Wii Play, which came with an extra Wiimote and was essentially the same game. And Mario Kart Wii, which... (cont)

Nah, Nintendo's console has legs. Downloadable content alone can sustain the Wii, and they can still rake in a pile of dough with every Mario/Zelda/Metroid/Pokemon etc release. The Wii development paid for itself a long time ago. While it can no longer compete with xbox and PS3, it's still profit

I think you're off on the "no new Nintendo console" thing, Jo.

Nintendo makes money on every console they sell. They have such a following that people will buy multiple consoles merely because they are different colors. They will make a new console, and new versions of each. And money. $Lots.
 Platypus
Nintendo called Apple the enemy and for good reason. Apple isn't even trying to compete for the casual market but have already sucked away WiiWare developers. That $99 entry fee for iOS development (700 if you include a MacMini) trumps the Wii kit.
 Platypus
Also you assume that casuals will buy Wii 2 like Wii 1. They won't. Why should they when nintendo gave them everying (sports resort 1&2, fit, Mario parties) they need to keep their party/fitness center. They aren't doing it for Zelda, they won't care.
 Platypus
The problem for Nity is over the last 4 years the causal market has shifted. I don't need a $250 console, I have my $250 phone I can anywhere. It likely already has better guts then the Wii or 3DS. iOS or Android doesn't matter. Nity has had the casual rug pulled from under it.

Game Gear vs Gameboy
One last thing: Even without Pokemon, the gameboy had a much longer life than the gamegear. Both companies were toying with new products; sure, VirtualBoy and the PowerGlove sucked, but things like the DS and the Wii were enormously successfu. I don't need to be a fanatic to keep the faith on big N.
Kinect and Move
BTW, the Xbox Kinect and PS Move are obvious attempts at trying to target the Wii's audience. Microsoft and Sony don't give a shit on focusing only on their supposedly hardcore-gamer audience, they'll go where the cash is. But the Wii is still cheapier, so Nintendo will stay on the market.
lol, Wii 2
You are forgetting that Nintendo actually opened the videogaming market for a whole niche who wasn't interested in games in the beginning. A lot of softcore gamers bought the Wii because of silly games, that's why Wii sales are so big. And if they bought the Wii, they'll buy the Wii2, too.
Tim
I really love some of the work that Nintendo do, but good God do they suck at using the Internet. They have some neat ideas for hardware, but at this point they should either get better programmers or leave the building of operating systems to people more skilled then they are.

Ditto with Blargmcblarg - Nintendo does ridiculous things like the Wii all the time. Hell, the PowerGlove was basically a direct copy of the thing. :|

Blargmcblarg

Don't see the argument put forth in the commentary. Nintendo has made a ton shilling to casuals, ok, it now faces fights with Apple, etc. But that's the handheld market. Casuals will still throw cash at a home console that appeals to them. Unless MS & Sony also abandon hardcore: No contest exists.

What? Are you joking? Wii has been outselling its competition for awhile now in both home and handheld. The comparison to SEGA doesn't even make sense. The Dreamcast failed because it didn't sell enough, and they were selling above cost, hoping their game sales will make up for it.

This is wikipedia, but.
On January 6, 2011, Microsoft stated that the Xbox 360 sold over 50 million units wordwide during their CES 2011 conference.
Playstation 3: 47.9 million as of December 31, 2010.
In January 2009 Sony announced that their gaming division was profitable in Q3 2008.

There was the Wii (2006). Then came the iPhone (2007). Now a plumber perspires (2011).
Sorry folks, Apple and Google have hit Nintendo in the market it opened, casual gamers. Why should I buy anything by Nintendo when Sega makes it all for iOS. An iPod does what a DS does, and web, and music, and

The hell are you talking about? Nintendo holds an overwhelming market share in the console wars and has made obscene amounts of money off of the Wii by opening up an entirely new market among casual gamers. To predict that they're going to give that up is ridiculous.

Unknown, I'm going to have to give you a resounding yes to that statement. Apple has certainly proven that.

As far as the "average hardcore gamer" constantly updating their console... Wat. Is updating every 5 to 6 years, when the next generation of console appears, constantly?

Nintendo really has no reason to leave the home console market. Not only do they have the most successful console of this generation, even when they didn't, they never stopped making money. The N64 was second-place, the GameCube third, but they both still turned significant profits.

I'd expect Nintendo to abandon the handheld market before the console market. It might be hard to fight the power-is-everything consoles, but it's even harder to fight subsidized cell phones. People are pulling hairs because of the price tag on the 3DS. Meanwhile, Evo 3D has better hardware for $200

I disagree with you...Nintendo won't bow out of the console market...namely because they are in a completely different market than their supposed competitors Sony and Microsoft. They may not ever be able to beat them or compete with them but then again they don't have to...

As for Kinect, it has the POTENTIAL to threaten the Wii, but it won't use it. Microsoft already has a specific market for the 360, and they've spent a long time building on it. They aren't going to take the risks needed to make anything big for Kinect. At the end of the day, it's just a peripheral.

The Wii's outrageously huge market share suggests to me that while there may be no new Nintendo console, the Wii isn't going anywhere any time soon. Might as well just keep building on what they've already got, yeah? They don't actually NEED a new console.

However, are they are likely to have trouble keeping these "ridiculous sales" going over new consoles? The average hardcore gamer keeps updating their console in order to stay right up to date with the latest and greatest games. Is the average casual gamer going to splash out in the same way?

I dunno. Is the Kinect that much of a "threat" to Wii? Sure, it does have the upper hand in graphics, but this new system... hmm... Dunno, lacking buttons, you can't do that many cool games.
Sony's maracas came too late to be considered at all.

Nintendo has abandoned their old market - the people that grew up on Nintendo consoles. Mothers and non-gamers make more money.

No, they won't leave the "console" market. But at the same time, they've already left the hardcore gaming console market, and won't be coming back.

Nintendo has always launched a handheld before a new console. IMHO if anything the 3ds is too expensive. Beefy is what sunk sony, nintendou knows better.

But the Wii has absolutely dominated the console market. As much as the hardcore market may complain about it, the Wii still has ridiculous sales of both consoles and software. Why would Nintendo abandon such a cash cow?

I really doubt nintendo will opt out of the console market next generation. They made far too much money off of the wii.

There will always be a pokemon franchise so it's only logical there would always be a nintendo handheld.
