I fell into a clear "noob trap" in Everquest. I played a druid. Druid is a strong soloer. Druid is good in the early game in parties. Druids are weak in raids and even in parties. Everything late game is made around burst healing and druids aren't built for that. Fun to level, bad end game.

It's worth noting "n00b trap" could have multiple meanings. Like "tech". To most it's short for "technology", but to some it's short for "technique". In some fighting games, it's how you counter a throw. In the Pokémon TCG, it was originally short for "technical advantage". Etc.

@EnragedFilia Noob trap refers to something that seems good at a glance, but actually is a detriment or non-viable that is recognized as such by more experienced players.

Had this in Division 2 recently. Failing at a meta sniper build around chaining headshots without a miss. Spent some time seething, but then had to admit the problem was me. Switched to a less powerful build around semiauto rifles and consistent hits and suddenly good DPS. Acknowledge your limits.

It's worth remembering that normally we say "noob trap" about build decisions that you're locked into permanently or semi-permanently (usually if a respec costs some sort of limited resource). In an environment where builds can be swapped in and out more freely that's more of a noob crutch.

I can relate. I've played a couple TCGs, and lots of video games. There are builds that are geared for players (new or not) who LACK the skill otherwise expected. In particular, s'why I STILL am bitter Mega Man 9/10 axed the slide, a move we had since Mega Man 3 in 1990!
