Just like the real horse she is based on. The real horse lost every race it participated but instead of being despised many people decide to raise this character so she can have a chance of winning. Again, growth is what attracts people to the game. The real horse is currently retired and thanks to
Con… this is a “nurturing” game. It is similar to Tamagochi in the sense that you don’t control the character, you raise the character and the fun is in promoting the character growth. One of the most popular characters in the game is a terrible runner

While I haven’t played this myself I have read about and have a friend who started playing recently. First of all these horse girls are actually based on real horses, and the story tend to follow real events. You can see comparison between anime scenes and the real race it was based.
Angie was later found dead with a horseshoe embedded in her skull.

@Itaru Karin Nope from what I seen its tame and the people love the characters personalities. You would think with its grinding it would be a niche thing but I seem two 80 years playing playing on public so I don't know it's has something that catches people's attention.
@Noel Loordes , I think it's mostly due to sheer difference in longevity between normal games and mobile games. Mobile developer can just vanish at any moment and thus can cash out on the most dubious and deplorable mechanics. Normal game developers have to consider reputational costs.

I mostly find it hilariously worrying how traditional (if that can even be applied here) gaming companies bend over backwards to avoid objectification and improve inclusiveness, while on the new main platform "mobile" games with from-cute-to-sexualized child/teen anime characters reign supreme.
Well, people didn't expect KanColle to get popular either and it's still going strong after 12 years with 500+ circles at Comiket. People looooove their niche interests.

I don't really get it. It's got minimal gameplay and tedious training sections. I'm assuming it's gooner bait and that's the target audience?
Gold Ship would be very interested in pulling a carriage. (For a while)

Cygames (Uma developers) are usually pretty good with being relatively fair with their gatchas. I played Dragalia Lost which was their Gatcha project with Nintendo and they gave out loads of currency over the games lifespan. Granblue Fantasy is very F2P friendly too.
