With borderlands, cover becomes a very important aspect of the game, and sometimes you need to get rather creative with it, using terrain and such. Most characters also have at least 1 method of reducing damage to themselves beyond that, such as Sal's taunt, Krieg's ultimate psycho, or Zero's ult.
