Back in my day, playing online would block the telephone line and if someone used the phone the game connection would drop, assuming the connection didn't drop randomly.

Assuming you managed to connect with another player (a feat in itself) you could enjoy the best rubberbanding gaming could offer.

It was not about playing online I guess, but to be tech savvy enough to make it work. No wonder lots of my gamer friends end up with computing jobs.
