Personally, I could only ever play XCom 1 modded via OpenXCom myself. The base techtree seemed to focus too much on slogging, which ate up time, and the utter ridiculous accuracy and the fact that training could only be done by doing didn't help matters. Don't fix everything, but hey, sniper rifles!
