I think a lot of why the 'WOW' factor in the PS4 is lost might just be from the fact Sony's forgetting it's greatest strength. It's colossal game library dating back to the PS1. Without backwards compatibility, what is the point of getting the PS4?
Querzis

@Beretta Isnt that also their own damn fault though? As in, they went crazy with anti-piracy and now its biting them in the ass?

You keep playing that. :)

And (like many ppl already said) they need to come up with new stuff.
The Wii was great to revive lightgun shooters and the Wii U pad now can serve as inventory or map
PS2 had Eyetoy (pretty casual but w/e)
PS3 has Playstation Move.
xbox 360 has Kinect.
But what's next?
Zugai

@Shadow12000 I feel with you.
They need games that:
Tell stories (Heavy Rain, Alan Wake)
Deliver real Horror, instead of just gore (Amnesia for example)
Enhence the RPG feeling by more freedom for both JRPG and RPGs similar to Fallout/Elder Scrolls

In the end gameplay and design are what matter the most. It is not like board games are dying out because their graphics are too bad. People's imagination fills the holes anyway.

As I see it, the more interesting possibility will be what kind of creativity all these ponies will allow game creators, now that they're, essentially, becoming multimillion movie shoots with a truckload of programmers trying to deliver the next summer sensation
Koiyuki
Well the trouble is you can only get so real with your graphics before you achieve photorealism, and suddenly realize you have nothing else up your sleeve. PS2 was getting close, PS3 got even closer, and now the next is getting to the point where high def graphics will no longer be a saving grade
Shadow12000
No, it's not just you, Jo. A friend and I both felt the same way, the entire show was full of buzz words rather than showing off what it can do. The old man? One company. Where's something beyond just graphics and how to socialize? Where's my fucking VR console? I want my dotHack and SAO, dammit!
Raven

With slightly better graphics and able to put a few more NPCs on the screen. I also want to see either complete games or cheaper games. Shouldn't have to buy DLCs to fill out a game that I've already paid $60 for because they wanted to release it before it was actually done.
Raven
@Delevion: Yes, but the issue becomes will they actually advance? Or will they just make more and more generic games where they just focus on the graphics as opposed to the gameplay? I'm all for advancing technologies in consoles as long as they don't basically rerelease the current games cont.

@Salty: of course. But as members of the glorious PC master race (tm) if both the PS4 and the durango XBox are multi-core PC's architecturally it will mean better games on the PC .

That problem was why the PS3 decided to go the hardware route. Cost more per unit, but solved the issue directly -and imagine the $ tag on a PS4&3 bundle.
I'm very disappointed as well but I get that it can be a lose-lose proposition at the point we're all at.
Beretta
@Querzis Looking at the Xbox-to-360 compatibility issues, very. Sony uses direct hardware emulation -a PS3 has a PS2 and a PS1 in it. That's expensive.
However, the XBox problem was that each game had to have it's developer code in the patch to make it playable on the 360. Didn't work.
Querzis

@Beretta wait wait wait, no backward compatibility? Is that true? Thats retarded, I didnt even know that. You can play gamecube games on the Wii U and its not even the same discs, how hard could it be really?

The many ages of Engie. Charming!
Every other PSX had some compelling draw (Motorstorm, Tekken and Heavenly Sword for me), and the PS4 has thus far 1) a sadly sorry PC title and 2) no backwards compatibility. Sure PS3 hardware emulation would probably be cripplingly expensive, but still.

I kinda think it's sad that a console that used to be heavy on good (exclusive) RPG titles (PS2) got a rather mixed/FPS heavy successor (at least I think so) and now PS4?
It'll probably be like the Wii U and have less than 20 titles (mostly ports) 3 months after launch.

Almost every game has less Game in it now more than ever. You've got DLC, hats, social shit etc. instead - it's about consumption and hyping consumers to chase the next gimmick. Support the good ones, give up the bad ones, however difficult it might be.

Oddly enough, the only thing that's truly excited me about any of the new console details is how PC-like the architecture is, which in turn means much easier porting of games to PC. I'm happy with my current crop of consoles and haven't seen a killer game yet announced for the new gen of consoles.

@Nullcast: I suppose what I'm trying to say is that there will be no emulation needed to play PS4 games on the PC. So why buy a PS4?

Too much graphic in modern games and not enough play. Bioware, Square Enix, a few others, should really just give up making games and just make movies.

I find it funny that something with a simple name is such a huge thing. At this point, it's not about the name, it's about what can be played on it. I mean, when the Play Station first came out, how appealing was that name? It's like a plane being called, flying machine. (It is in German)

@Salty: So? I'm not saying it's a workstation. What I'm saying is the architecture looks straightforward to program with relatively few bottlenecks to multithreading. It looks like it's been architected to make new things possible on consoles, not pretty pixels. I hoping for new mechanics.

At some point we can make very nice graphics, and adding polygons allow us more detail, but can be hard to see as a huge leap forward
CJ
There's actually a scientific reason behind this. We've basically been multiplying the amount of triangles (polygons) by 10 with each generation of consoles once we went 3D. So if it started at 100 on PSX, PS2 was 1,000, PS3 10,000, and ps4 100,000.
Sage

It's less that the console capabilities is getting weaker and more on the fact that the audience they're targeting has already grown up and is harder to impress now as each have their own idea on what they want to see.

Sorry guys, but I'm with Jo on this one.

Sadly the amazing feeling for passing from SNES to the new PSX isn't something you can really explain with words. Now with all the new "improvements" in gaming consoles that are nothing more than little hardware upgrades, that Wow factor is long gone.
So, one time Engie dyed her hair black and during the PS4-Annoucement, she cosplayed as Jill from RE3?
And yet, she still has no proper name?
T
Just going to through this out there. You can't judge a PS4 solely by specs against a PC. You're ignoring the OS level which is pretty hefty. Consoles have an OS that runs that is specific to the console rather than generic. Generic OS always has more bloat and eats away at more system resources.
Altherix
Custom "PC" hardware. Exclusive big name titles are getting rare, most big names are released on all platforms. That's why the, "Wow" factor has really disappeared from consoles. My PS3 is currently used as a video streaming device to my TV.
MartyMcFly
So AMD could develop a 20 core - it wouldnt change the fact that a console will never beat a PC in hardware (te PS4 is still a long time away)
The great thing about a console is that the developers can do their thing for only one setup thus creating a superior experience with the same hardware.
MartyMcFly

"8 GB GDDR5 RAM"
So? there is already the GeForce Titan with 6 GB of that superl33tawesomewhatever RAM on the market.
Without accounting the standard amount of RAM in the PC itself.
And AMD is really running after Intel with its CPUS at the moment.

@assmaster yeah what you're saying is generally true...
i was about to call you on mount and blade and 1,000 NPCs... then notice you said mount and blade with 1,000 NPCs...
The problem here is that PS4 is just a PS3 with better hardware. At this time and age, "just" a hardware upgrade is common place, at least for people that use computers. It's just not THAT special thing anymore.
AEIOU
I know this won't happen, but hopefully they might just say screw it with bumping up polys and focus on getting more NPCs on screen, greater graphical effects, better AI, and huge environments with insane draw distance.
Querzis
Yeah Sony really doesnt get it. Everything they say their PS4 will be able to do, my two years old PC can already do better and it can do other stuff too. To stay relevant, you have to go the Nintendo way and make your console do things a PC cant do.
assmaster
Currently the amount of NPCs in screen at same time during combat in pretty much most games is generally around 10-15 max.

Ramp that up to around 500 possible NPCs during one fight and I'll buy whatever console that game is on.
Mount and blade did 1000 NPC battles, why can't they?

Raven

It's hard to compare a first gen electronic device with current technology for prices because they would have had to try to guess the sales for a brand new market to set the price. Whereas nowadays they have an idea of the number that will sell, plus feedback about prices from old gens.

I don't buy consoles as soon as they are released because they usually end up overpricing them to start with and they have a poor starting lineup of games. I find a new console release time is a good time to go back and play some of my old games. I bought my PS just before the PS2 release.

Tbh the latest Sony conference is a huge improvement from previous conference. Rather than showing gimmicks they actually show a ton of games we can expect.

In the end it's the games that sell the machine, and not the other way around.
The fact about consoles being more powerful than computers, is that halfway through the console's lifetime, low-end computers are more powerful than it anyway, thus developers have to "dumb-down" games to port them to the console. The solution: as @Salty said, be cheap, or do the Nintendo.
Salty
@Nullcast: Just FYI. I have a computer that's a year and a half old. I bought it for about $700, and it's STILL more powerful than the PS4 is supposed to be.

Consoles need to either be much cheaper than an equivalently powered PC, or provide new functionality *coughNintendocough* to be relevant.
Nullcast

GCN and 8 cores (four modules then?) all sharing an address space and access to a largish pool of fast memory. And it's all guaranteed to be there? Yeah, I'm betting developers can do some very interesting things with that. That's a lot of potential for simulation.
