Yeah, I know how you feel. Even Halo 4 kinda feels kinda samey to me as well. Oh well, at least we've got Primal Carnage! Something original for once! :D

Really don't see why you complain. I played the first two hour or so so far and watched my bro play till chapter 6. Sure, starts out diffrently but if you play SOLO you are pretty much in same state like in DS2 at least if it's about atmosphere. Just the weapons... I dunno.

So why pay for video games that are ultimately so watered down as to not justify the $60 price tag?

Believe it or not, we do have a choice in what games we play and what we don't play.
Raxyz
Well... DeS 3 isn't bad indeed. But i agree with you. It's not like the first.

At least it makes sense storywise, y'know, not being horror anymore. And we can always count on Frictional for atmospheric creepy games. ;)

"Appealing to a broader audience" = making it more generic and easily palpable to people used to something more popular at the cost of what made it any different from all the other games, thus losing the only reason to play it over the other games.
The Dude
"Appeal to a broader audience." Those words make me cringe. I haven't played yet but I can't wait. I know it's not gonna be as good as DS or DS2 (those games were so equally amazing), but why the need for greater appeal? I don't see that many people who haven't played 1 or 2 picking this up.

Did not buy DS2 because of the completely unnecessary and easy-shock-value child killing, DS3 just looks boring. As you said: Gears of War.

Play some Fire Emblem Awakening or Sly Cooper to get away from these type of games.

Some people says that DS 1 was more scary than DS 2 (and DS 3), and you know what, DS 1 is not a scary game,it has only 3 scary moments and 1 is a cheap trick, the classic ... quiet quiet quiet BOOH! (the ending movie).

@Mortal Kumquat:

You didn't see the black gung-ho type dying? That's pretty much the mainstay of horror genre.
Zugai
(continue)I'm getting DS3 tomorrow to play it with my bro to see first hand how it ended up. Either way I wanna know how the story goes on.
Zugai
@Mortal Kumquat: Indeed. I actually replayed DS Extraction wihch at times had quite nice scares (and so many ppl died D:) But yeah, if you compare DS 1 to 2 it already loses part of the horror. The scenery (empty hallways, blood, corpses) is still great but there is less "I just sh*t my pants"
Metaldude
Ya know, this actually raises a valid point. What would one of your favorite games be like if it was made like another of your favorite games? Imagine Legend of Zelda if it looked like Skyrim. Or if Left4Dead played like XCOM: Enemy Unknown.

Grant it I wanted co-op also... but not a gears of war copy. I wanted dead space with two people. It's adding fear into both players as you both get more paronide as your eneimes close in on you. Sort of like dead space 2 multi player vs. Its not how many there are of you. Its when they find you.
Blu Soldier
Game developers tastes change, and the games they make are reflective of that Jo. Although, it is sad to see them make such a drastic change, you can't expect them to stick with one formula. They needed the change to not only push an evolving story, but also to branch out themselves.
Funny
I love listening to people claim "Dead space lacked horror" Those are the ones i can tell were simply to afraid to actually play them XD

Oh and the one's who claim it's too easy, should really have played on the hardest difficulty... that shit drove me made... particularly DS2
Tear
I'm so happy Jo said EXACTLY what i've been saying to everyone about this game. Dead space 1 an 2 are nearly my favorite games of all time ( so much so i played DS1 to 100% completion) this third one is just... wrong
SorataYuy

Easy solution to stop being disappointed, Jo. Stop playing these types of games. There ya go.

Mortal Kumquat
The best way to play any DS game is alone, at night, in the dark, when you're slightly tired.
Part and parcel of the whole horror of the game was being....alone. Completely alone.
That and the side characters dying. Really didn't see the dying coming after they had survived for so long.

Eh, tell you the truth, I was never scared of Dead Space.
Just saying, It's hard to feel scared when all the creatures are so loud, and you kill them by the dozens, and the ammo is plentiful, and the best weapon in the game is the one you start with.

It seems like when a new 3rd person shooter comes out, people are quick to scream, "Gears rip off"! If anything, Gears is a Kill Switch rip off. What about the SOCOM series? What about Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2? How about the Getaway, where you could lean on a wall and recover health?

@KillerXzow We've waited so long, HL3 pretty much has to be a disappointment now. They can't possibly live up to so many years of lofty expectations.

It's the pirates, the dirty pirates! We need to sell millions of copies to keep up with our bloated meaningless budgets for games and these used game sellers go around ruining everything!
Xifihas
For what it's worth, Dead Space 3 being faster paced and having Co-Op makes sense from a story perspective. The threat is known and there's an organised movement to stop it (along with one supporting it). Really the thing that annoys me the most about DS3 is the universal ammo.

That is why i suport Valve. They doesnt need a "new" game every 6 months that is target to the "mass" and looks like CoD, Gears, God of War,etc.

They survive with Steam, get some nice profit in TF2 + D2 microtransactions and make games when they WANT TO MAKE A F**KING GREAT GAME.

Can't do much more than agree with Jo here. While there being tons of AAA-clone games out there makes things easier for us indie developers, seeing the same game released for the twelfth time makes my inner gamer sad. =(

Was it EA's chief of marketing that said that Dead Space would be toned down "because it's too scary for some of our players"? It's been a few months, I forget.
mindfaQ
That's because investors/publishers aka the money decides the direction many games are taking and wandering already laid out paths seems safer to them (even if the game is only good, it will still create at least some revenue), while new ways would be a gamble in their eyes.

@_: ME RPG elements are pretty thin too, since you can never know what your character will even say (often not quite what you expect), and you can get through the whole game by just mashing spacebar (because there is no "failure state" in dialogues). I like the series, but them's the breaks.

Also I'll never get behind this: RPG doesn't equal "level up and get gear", it's a game with a storyline and plot decisions. Role Playing Game. Can't wait till Project Eternity comes out.

It sucks because the new generations are so influenced by marketing they'll never get tired of this. Just like what happened with movies, all new games will appeal to the same target audience. Just look at Mass Effect...

@Buddha: mass effect was always a shooter with RPG elements rather than RPG, only a mechanically shitty one in 1, better but stuck-to-cover in 2 and finally a decent one in 3. they did such a "thing" with dragon age which changed from RPG to a shallow slasher.

common line of life for a trilogy:
1) try to innovate
2) hook more people, with some ideas from 1
3) just do a "popular" game with the licence, money before entertainement

I had hoped they would be able to do fun things with fog effects, to create a tense, claustrophobic atmosphere, even in open space. If it's not scary, I'll be disappointed, but I do feel like the surface of a planet is the logical progression. Single Spaceship -> Space Station -> Planet.

I remember seeing gameplay of DS3...it´s such a downer that they took a great horror game and made it yet anothr shooter. DS1 had the tentacles, DS2 had the astmosphere and now DS3 has none of those.

DK

Remember when FPS games used to be called "Doom clones?" Now we have:

FPS = COD clones
TPS = GoW clones

Not quite sure if Action Games should be called "God of War clones" or "DmC clones."

I agree that its sad and this is coming from someone who actually love Gears of Wars and coudnt finish the first Dead Space (I stopped after peeing a bit in my pants.) Games developpers should try to please their existing fanbase instead of trying to steal the fanbase of an entirely different game.

Makes me think about games that intentionally subvert the mold.

One of the things I really liked about Space Marine was how it basically looked at the concept of "cover" and "regenerating health," considered them, then threw them away in favor of "you want a heal? go murder a dude."
