interesting, nobody mentioned LOTRO yet.
there you can have a shiny lock-boxes as a loot drop, but the drop rate of keys to open them is so rate the only viable option is to buy them from the cash shop :-)

In WoW, I once got a thorium lockbox opened only to find another thorium lockbox inside the first lockbox.

@d: well he lost money. keys aren't really that expensive, but it still stings when these things happens

In Skyrim all you do is pick the lock. Keys are for lesser mortals... or quest-specific locks.

Binding of Isaac in a nutshell: Open chest, get something useless. Blow up random rock, gain incredibly useful item.

Like everyone already said, Isaac. Buy key, open chest, get lit bomb. Every time, every day.

in some other RPGs, you'll need a specific key to open the chest only to get a key for a lower tier chest

@BLU Scout: Here's the fun thing, though: I've HAD that happen to me before! It was a freakin' matryoshka chest that sapped your keys!

Hopefully it was a D3 key so poor not-Link can quest somewhere where the random loot is free.

Remember, with micro transactions gaming will go down the shitter. remember that, gamers. remember that. and don't forget to buy your official amazing spider-man triple action web blaster! "batteries and web sold separately"

I am so sick of retro gamers enjoying their childhood classics and classics they missed out on in the past! DEATH TO snes, nes, genesis, game boy, dreamcast and anything else that does not play COD!

I don't get it. MOAR BRO game humor! call of gears duty theft auto halo, bitches! don't forget to give up your rights as consumers and swith to the cloud so corporate america can fuck you up the ass and take you whole collection of games away at will, gamers! WHOOSH! you favorites are gone.

At least you didn't waste the key. Just one less chest for you to deal with.

Random loot is best controlled. Find something nice early by chance, sure, but not MegaEndGameDeathSwordOfGloomAndDoomAndThingsThatGoBoom+11. That should only show up in the secret post-game dungeon of Dexter's Lab, and should only be a 1/882777010489288485790 from secret boss treasure chests.

Yo dawg, I heard you like keys, so I put a key in yo chest so you can key when you key.

You like random loos where you can find something awesome? You don't mean something like the first story:
http://abcnews.go.com/US/LegalCenter/story?id=985438&page=1#.T1JJa-V7VhE Was vacationing in Conway when it happened and saw it in a local paper, kind of disturbing.

I used to play this one MMO where you had to buy in-game cash to get a 'chance' on getting something useful.
Kinda like how TF2's crate system works, but there were far more crap items in that MMO than in TF2. Besides, I don't uncrate in TF2 anyway.

I sort of dislike games in general that have keys, crates and other useless items in the loot pool. Especially if you got to spend real money get some of those or open them. That is just one more attempt to milk the gamers.

Morrowind was kinda cool because chest loot was partially determined by the Luck skill. SO boost your luck and you'll find some pretty sweet gear.

You really really really really really really need to play Castlevania: Harmony of Despair. Then we'll talk.

I kinda even enjoy that kind of disappointment in RPG, you know. Even shitty 'loo' is a part of an RPG experience!

Screw games with too much random elements. If I wanted something where luck decides the majority of the game, I'd waste my $5-$20 on a slot machine.

@vash_ts: A full run takes about half an hour so starting from scratch was not bad.
If the 1st couple of levels didn't give me something good, I'd restart right there and cut my losses. about 1 year ago
And then you have treasure chests that contain locked chests... that contain an even smaller locked chest within them.

binding of isaac was nicely done, but starting from scratch every time was hell to me...

@Kyong: Binding of Isaac is exactly what I thought of when I saw this. Love it. Looking forward to Wrath of the Lamb, too!
